Roberts described where the guns had been hidden, and Hensley found the third gun â the one used to kill Fox â after Roberts told him where to look.
Richard Slater was a young detective constable who was one of many in the charge room at Shepherdâs Bush when Roberts was charged. âI recall the charge room being lined âseveral deepâ with officers who just watched the charging, at the desk in the middle of the room, in absolute silence, and it remained absolutely static until Roberts had been led from the room,â Slater told me. âThat moment has remained in my memory to this day.â
Roberts appeared at West London Magistratesâ Court and was sent, on a Bill of Indictment, straight to the Old Bailey, where on 6 December 1966, before Mr Justice Glyn-Jones, Duddy, represented by Mr W. M. Hudson, and Witney, represented by Mr James Comyn QC, pleaded not guilty to the three murders and the charges of possessing firearms. Roberts, represented by Mr James Burge QC, pleaded guilty to the murders of Wombwell and Head, of being an accessory to the murder of Fox and of possessing firearms. The prosecution was led by the Solicitor-General, Sir Dingle Foot QC.
After a six-day trial, the jury at the Old Bailey took barely thirty minutes to find the men guilty of the senseless murders, and Mr Justice Glyn-Jones passed sentence on all three, saying:
I pass on you the sentence prescribed by law for the crime of murder, on each count of which you have been convicted, that is, of imprisonment for life. You have been justly convicted of what is perhaps the most heinous crime to have been committed in this country for a generation, or more. I think it likely that no Home Secretary regarding the enormity of your crime will ever think fit to show mercy by releasing you on licence. This is one of those crimes in which the sentence of life imprisonment may well be treated as meaning exactly what it says. Lest any Home Secretary in the future should be minded to consider your release on licence, I have to make a recommendation. My recommendation is that you should not be released on licence, any of the three of you, for a period of thirty years, to begin from todayâs date.
